I'll give Lou an A on the offseason thus far.

Checklist:
-Extend Schneider - CHECK
-Add 1 or 2 top 6 F - CHECK
-Clear out log jam of D - CHECK (rather lose Sal than Fayne but w/e)

Still gotta clear out a couple forwards, if Lou can somehow turn a few of those mediocre guys into another real top 6 F than I'd say A+ offseason, but even just moving a couple of those guys for mid-round picks would be alright.

That may be true, but he's played 13 less games than Tuukka Rask over the last four years, posted better numbers on lesser teams and nobody blinked an eye when he signed a more lucrative deal.

Really? Most people I talked to thought it was a very big gamble.

I thought the Hawks giving Crawford his deal was more ballsy.

It's a deal that had to get done.

In fairness, it should be a concern to see how well Schneider holds up in the playoffs. He's never played the amount of games that he'll be expected to play, he has had some injury problems in the past, and he did not look sharp at all in his last playoff series, a 4 game sweep against the Sharks.

Hopefully they put themselves in good enough position that Kinkaid can give him a few spells down the stretch.

He also had a Vancouver D in front of him in the 13' playoffs that allowed an average of just under 40 shots against, and 47 in one game in that series. Vancouver could only come up with around 30 shots for so its not like the ice wasn't slanted a little.

Holtby should be there between Bobrovsky and Quick...

He played for the 2 time President Trophy winning Canucks. Not too many teams better than that (at least in terms of regular season success). Great goalie, but until he wins something, calling him the best in the game is a bit premature.

The Sharks had more than double the power plays than the Canucks did in that series. The Canucks were shorthanded most of the series.

I used top-5 current starters in SV% over the four years and then added a few notables for comparison

I am not a fan of Schneider, but those numbers are pretty good. I mean, they did trade 9th overall pick for him, so they had to lock him up. Guess that was the lowest, fair price they could get him for, so good for the Devils!

The Devils do play a more defensive style game, so I don't plan on his numbers going up (or at all) over the next few years. After that, having a solid goalie at $6M per in 3-4 years should be a great price! So job well done Lou!

Whether or not Schneider "deserves" this contract or not (at this time) is debatable either way. That said, given what Lou gave up to acquire Schneider pretty much forced his hand to just get it done.

Couldn't be happier! Lou has finally learned and the cap hit is reasonable and the term is not at all bad. Schneider should still be a solid goalie at the end of it.

If memory serves he had a groin issue that nagged him down the stretch one year in Vancouver. I think it was the year they were swept. He tried to play through it.

"The numbers suggest the Devils have the best goaltender in hockey signed"

The numbers also suggest that, until this year, Cory Schneider has never played more than 35 games in any single season, and still hasn't played north of 50. Whereas many of the top goaltenders in the league have really carried the load, playing over 60 (and sometimes over 70 games) over the past several years.

Cory Schneider is a very good goaltender, and that is a smart contract by any measure, IMO, but even to suggest, based on numbers or otherwise, that he is the best goaltender is without merit. Let him play outside of a committee for once in his career, before even mentioning him in that category.
